Her mother is of Irish descent. She was a ballet student in her early years and started dancing professionally at the age of 14 and was awarded scholarships to the San Francisco Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre. When she turned 20 years old aged and performing professionally with American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company (then known as ABT II), the moment came to determine if she wanted to join the company's main stage. Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was the artistic director at the time, informed her "You're a lovely dancer, but you're too stocky." According to her, it was "my epiphany " when I decided to put down my dancing and to not being a ballet performer. It was a wonderful moment. I could have banged my head against the wall for another ten years. "[She began acting. She moved to New York at the age of 20 and appeared in several Burger King commercials in the 1980s with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her co-star in Back to the Future Part II was Elisabeth Shue. Jaws 3-D was her movie debut in 1983. I told them I was proficient in water ski. I didn't. Therefore, I had five days to master complex water-skiing tricks, since I was expected to participate in the Sea World water-skiing show. I don't even know how do I swim!" She followed this up with All the Right Moves (1983), Red Dawn (1984) and The Wild Life (1984).
