Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay learned to love art from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. When she was a student DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
