Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16, 1936 until August 17, 2015) was an American actress, ballet dancer and choreographer. Craig is most well-known for her appearances in Batman's television series from the 1960s Batman and Marta who played an Orion slave girl sporting green skin, in the Star Trek 1969 episode "Whom Gods Destruction". The Huffington Post called her "a pioneer in female superheroes" for the television. Yvonne Craig was raised in Columbus and was born in Taylorville in Illinois. Her family relocated in 1951 from Illinois to Dallas. In Dallas, she attended W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas as well as Sunset High School. However, she did not complete her studies as she did not have "one credits for PE". Craig was recognized by Alexandra Danilova (a ballerina and teacher) and was accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and became its youngest corps de ballet member. The training helped her when she performed stunts while performing as Batgirl. She quit the ballet company in 1957 "over a disagreement on casting decisions" and relocated to Los Angeles in the hopes of continuing her dancing career, but was acting in films. One of her first TV appearances was in an episode from the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover", 1958) alongside Neil Hamilton, who played her stepfather (later Hamilton played Police Commissioner James Gordon, Batgirl's father). Shortly afterwards, she appeared in three films - The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story and Gidget (all 1959)--and as a guest in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was in the film with Bing Crosby (1960), and Seven Women from Hell (1961), which featured Cesar Romero. In 1962, she was an actress on Western Laramie's show "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley's character in It happened at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin Cousins (64). She also starred in the science fiction film Mars Needs Women (1966) and also appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as an in-character Russian dancer who was paired with James Coburn.
